The cave was discovered in 1960 by Vakhushti Bagrationi Geography Institute (Georgian SSR Academy of Sciences) Speleological expedition.
Under the leadership of L.I. Maruashvili the cave was studied to a depth of 95m and was called Krubera cave, in honor of the founder of the Russian and Soviet Karst A.A. Kruber.
